decioo decision framework
The decioo decision framework is a model that enables work-sharing decision making with several participants in four stages. For this purpose, the roles “Driver”, “Approver”, “Contributor” and “Observer” are predefined.
4 Key-Roles
Different roles for each decision case
At the beginning, all team members agree that certain tasks in the decision-making process will be done by certain people. The potential for conflict is (usually) eliminated.
Driver (D)
The “Driver” as manager of the decision case
The driver does not have approval authority (that belongs to the Approver), but serves more as a decision-case-manager. This role starts the decision, collects the decision options, defines the decision goal, assigns the roles of the people involved and controls the timing during the decision making process. One Driver per decision case is recommended.
Approver (A)
The final decision by the “Approver”
The approver makes the binding decision. The number of approvers should be reduced to a minimum to speed up the decision-making process. To make the final decision, the Approver uses the information and analysis provided and prepared by the Contributor.
Contributors (C)
“Contributors” gather and evaluate information
Contributors have expert knowledge relevant to the decision case. The contributor role therefore gathers all the information relevant to the decision, evaluates and summarizes them. Several contributors are possible, e.g. persons from development, sales and legal department.
Observer (O)
“Observers” are informed about the decision outcome
Observers are affected by the decision outcome and must therefore be informed about the decision result. The observer role can be assigned optionally and has veto rights, as long as these have been assigned by the driver. For example, the supervisory board or the lead investor of a startup can take on the role of observer.
Advantages
Why is the decioo decision framework so effective?
One clear role for each decision stage
Each of the roles (driver, approver, contributor and observer) is designed so that every aspect of decision-making is included as part of the process.
Faster decision making is possible
The decioo decision framework speeds up decision-making by eliminating potential disagreements that may otherwise require hours of discussion to resolve.
A practice proven framework
The concept of using different roles in the decision-making process was originally initiated in the 1980s by the software company Intuit. Since then, the concept has been known as the DACI framework. decioo has taken up the concept and extended it as the “decioo decision framework”.
Less friction loss
The framework eliminates subjective friction by giving complete authority over specific aspects of decision making to a specific person — there are no arguments over who gets the final call, or whose job it is to lay out the facts.
Imbalances in the team will reduce
The decioo decision framework evens out team imbalances by removing collective responsibility and instead of giving authority to just one person. This becomes very important when stakeholders don’t agree on a final decision — by design, they must concede to the approver.
Extensions
Add-ons for the decioo decision framework
The decioo decision framework is a solid basis that can be combined with selected approaches to optimize decision making.
1. Use additional classic decision methods such as pro-con lists or scenario analysis.
2. Use technology-supported decioo feature e.g. through the AI-supported gather and preparation of information.
